Worldwide Pablo and Jack Bog made the same interesting point yesterday, which I’ll summarize and distort slightly as this syllogism:
1. The 2004 presidential election is likely to be a close race, maybe as close as the 2000 race.
2. Oregon was a close state in 2000 and is likely to be a close state in 2004.
3. In fact, Oregon might be the deciding state.
4. The November ballot will carry an initiative banning same-sex marriages, which is likely to encourage conservative voters to come to the polls.
5. Perhaps in numbers large enough to carry Oregon for George Bush.
6. And therefore to re-elect George Bush, simply because the iniative is on the ballot.
7. The iniative wouldn’t be on the ballot if Diane Linn hadn’t ordered the Multnomah County Clerk to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, because its backers went to the effort to get the 244,000 signatures only because Multnomah County was issuing same-sex marriage licenses.
8. Therefore if the race is close and Oregon goes for Bush, he will owe his re-election victory to Diane Linn.
Why George Bush should replace Richard Cheney with Diane Linn
