A Laquedem friend, possibly quoting from one of the wags on television, said that the good thing about North Korea’s nuclear test this week is that the Beloved Leader Kim now has one less bomb than he had last week.
That’s good news for Seoul, Pusan, or Tokyo; we just don’t know which one yet.

Tangentially, Kim is also a celebrated author of classics such as Madame Bovary and Pride and Prejudice – did you know?
(My uncle, a nuclear engineer, worked in North Korea when the French company who employed him sent him there for power generation projects. My uncle had a bit of time to spend in the facility’s library — classics can be found, all written by Kim Jong Il. Who knew?)
Shelley, many years ago a South Korean diplomat gave me a copy of the Pyongyang Times, English edition, which was four pages long. The first three pages were a speech given by The Respected And Beloved Leader Comrade Kim Il-Sung. The fourth page reported on the doings of The Respected And Beloved Leader Comrade Kim Il-Sung and quoted the congratulatory telegrams he was supposed to have received from other world leaders. At one point on page four the proofreader slipped up and referred to the prime minister as the mere Respected Leader Comrade Kim Il-Sung, which probably cost him his job.
