I had been uneasy about same-sex marriages and in favor of civil unions. I became more open to the idea of same-sex marriages after seeing the effect on some same-sex couples who obtained marriage licenses.
What will happen if same-sex marriages are banned?
1. Will gay couples stop living together? No. (Laws against premarital straight sex didn’t work.)
2. Will gay couples stop having sex together? No. (Prohibition didn’t work.)
3. Will gay people become straight? No. (Mandating a state religion didn’t work.)
4. Will gay people be unable to buy houses as tenants by the entirety (a form of ownership available only to married couples)? Yes.
5. Will gay people be unable to file joint state income tax returns? Yes.
This initiative isn’t a moral or religious question; it’s a tax measure. Whatever my opinions may be on homosexual conduct, I’m perfectly happy with gay couples owning houses and paying income taxes under the same rules that apply to Mrs. Laquedem and me.

Good point, agree.
I do hear a few folks bitching around here that same-sex marriage and civil unions will cost society money by extending various benefits like social security, healthcare, etc. Rather like the joint income tax returns you note, I’m okay with the minor financial implications.
Federal Income Taxes won’t be changed by Oregon.
The Left has been weakening marriage for the past 100 years, seeing it as an inherantly conservative institution. This gay-marriage movement is rooted in that larger effort to abolish marriage.
And I will trust the State to give me equality when they stop discriminating against Whites, Males, people under 55….
