Not that I think today’s parents push their children more than did parents of yesteryear, but based on what I overheard at some recent gatherings of parents, I have the uncomfortable belief that I could sell a million copies of a book entitled “Teach Your Fetus to Read,” and most of the buyers would be serious.

Totally agree – and also shake my head in bemusement as well. I watched parents of my daughter’s classmates last year get all worked up and nervous about next year’s first grade teacher choices at her old school – all of whom were fine choices, if not always the best at communicating with parents.
I really wish parents would throw the kind of energy they have for their own child’s own supposed needs into ways to benefit their child’s classroom or school as a whole. It really does help float the boat for all concerned – including their own kid.
