I returned from a week away from the blogosphere to find that this modest weblog had more visitors in the last week, when I posted nothing, than in all but one of the previous weeks. I’m uncomfortably reminded of the gentle put-down of a 19th-century wag (Oscar Wilde? James Whistler?) who said of another, "He has flashes of conversation that make his silences perfectly delightful."

I have looked several times for your in-depth evaluation of the public schools in Oregon and wondering if you will comment on reports that Oregon gets lower marks in providing for at-risk preschoolers than it does for its universal entitlement the K-12 public schools.
Admiral Rickover said a democratic public education entitlement depends on having all students abreast at the starting line as it is impossible to expect them to be abreast at the finish line.
I have a lot more to say about public school finance, but I’ve been slow in transferring it to the written word.
