This morning I heard Lars Larson’s one-minute squib on KXL, to the effect that John Kerry and Neil Goldschmidt were dining (with different parties) at the same Portland restaurant, and Senator Kerry went over to Uncle Neil and chatted for some time. From this Mr. Larson inferred that Senator Kerry isn’t bothered by statutory rapists. (Mr. Larson didn’t mention that the restaurant was El Gaucho, which he identifies as one of his favorite restaurants and which is one of his sponsors.)
Then I read Jonathan Nicholas’s column in the morning O, which also mentioned Senator Kerry’s dinner, but described the incident quite differently, in these words: “As Kerry left [the restaurant], he happened to walk by the table at which the disgraced former guv was eating. According to a campaign spokesperson, an obviously well-briefed Kerry ‘never stopped, never chatted, never said more than ‘Hi.’”
Somebody’s spinning a line. Any guesses who?

Who’s sleazier, Lars or Neil? No contest, my friend, no contest.
The issue isn’t who is sleazier, the issue is that Lars is lying about the thing to make political hay against Kerry and some people are helping him do it.
The basic story of some sort of verbal exchange between the two men at the restaurant appears to have been corroborated beyond a doubt. And the chance of the meeting being a coincidence seems infinitesmally small. You can hate him, but it’s hard to see how the guy’s “lying” about this.
All those men and their meat.
The meeting may have been a coincidence for Senator Kerry, but not for Uncle Neil. It was no secret that the Senator was staying at the Benson Hotel. I can picture Uncle Neil deciding that this would be a fine evening to have dinner in one or the other of the Benson’s restaurants, just in case Senator Kerry should be there also.
