When Wayne Scott, the majority leader of the Oregon House of Representatives, was tagged for not reporting a Hawaii junket on his disclosure forms, he said that he didn’t realize that his trip to a Maui resort (paid for by the beer and wine distributors) cost more than the reporting limit. The reporting limit is $144.
That explains why the legislature pinches pennies when it funds our public schools: they figure that if $143.99 can buy a Hawaii resort vacation, $7000 a student should be able to buy a first-rate education.
