Thirty-five years ago today

Neil Armstrong and Col. Edwin Aldrin walked on the moon, becoming the first humans to set foot there. Armstrong got to go first, partly because he was the lander’s commander and partly because he was a civilian. Although it’s hard for us to recall the Cold War mindset now, NASA was fearful of making the Moon missions look too military.
