It is impossible to improve on the opening sentence of Virgil Langtry’s opinion in Edwards v. State Military Department, in volume 8 of the Oregon Appellate Reports (1972), reviewing a case from Linn County. Judge Langtry’s opinion begins:
“Plaintiff was injured when an M2 self-propelled anti-aircraft weapon (commonly referred to as a tank) collided with the log truck he was driving.”
The tank was out of its lane and on the wrong side of the highway center line, though (akin to the fabled 800-pound gorilla), whatever lane an M2 tank occupies pretty much becomes its lane.
