The trial of Martin Weitzman, the Harvard professor of economics who is accused of stealing $600 of manure from a 98-year-old farmer, has been postponed until August 1.  According to the Boston Globe the prosecution says that Professor Weitzman’s lawyer wanted more time to study evidence turned over to him by the state.  Professor Weitzman’s lawyer, Thomas O’Shea, has a different explanation for the delay: he says his client turned down a plea bargain which would have required Professor Weitzman to admit guilt.  In Mr. O’Shea’s apposite words, "The case stinks."
